Broadband is the transfer of high bandwidth of data over high-speed internet connection. In this age of digital economy transformation it is important that a country willing to grow its economy and integrate its citizen prioritize the penetration and assimilation of broadband technology, A World Bank report had established that every 10% increase in broadband penetration in any country would improve its GDP by at least 4.6%, as thus, President Muhammadu Buhari made a promise to treat Broadband as Critical Infrastructure to drive Nigeria’s digital economy growth and improve the country’s GDP.

The new National Broadband Plan (NBP, 2020-205) is designed to deliver data download speeds across Nigeria of a minimum 25Mbps in urban areas, and 10Mbps in rural areas, with effective covering at least 90% of the population and penetration rate of 70% by the end of the plans lifetime. The graph below shows the marginal increase in broadband penetration within a 12-month period.

According to the graph above released by NCC the country’s Broadband penetration shows marginal growth over the 12-month periods from 39.79 of July 2021 to 44.32 in July 2022, a 1% average monthly growth in broadband penetration is recorded. The data showed a slow but steady growth of the broadband penetration which indicate government efforts in achieving the NBP has be steady.

The slow penetration of broadband threatens the successful implementation of the National Broadband plan and thus, put in jeopardy the president’s promise of making broadband a critical infrastructure. This promise is rated “In the works”.
