One of Prof. Charles Soludo's promises on environment in his manifesto document is "Special attention will be given to Okpoko in Ogbaru LGA which is home to the largest urban slum in Anambra, as it will provided with modern basic amenities"

As part of the fulfilment of its promises to the people of Anambra State, the state Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Sọludo, has begun the clearing of wastes and desilting of drainage in Onitsha.

The 3-day exercise commenced on Saturday, 2nd April and will end on Monday, 4th April.

According to Punch Newspaper, Governor Sọludo appeared at the venue by 11:32 am on Saturday to monitor and supervise the work being done in the area. The areas being supervised ranged from Obiano Park, Upper Iweka areas of Onitsha South, Reggae, Ochanja market and Ochanja Roundabout.

Onitsha is a highly commercial city has gained notoriety for its poor environmental state with the numerous drainages across major roads in the state being a cesspool for various non-biodegradable wastes.

Meanwhile, the government has also resumed similar duty at Okpoko, one of the largest slums in the state, in Ogbaru LGA near Onitsha.

As part of the efforts, the government has also marked 200 houses in the area as illegal structures to be demolished to create space in the area and help check erosion in the area every rainy season.

We rate this Promise In the Works.
